Derek pledges an oath to protect Kate to allow Curran to save face. Since then, he has been around helping to keep her out of trouble and making snide comments along the way. He's 18 years old and a werewolf, with enough power to be the alpha of wolves one day. He makes an excellent sidekick because he is a good form of light-heartedness in the midst of chaos. He has a broken past that he has risen above and has a great strength of character. One of my favorite things about people is when they triumph over all their hardships and come out the other side a better person.
